“Last week I started coughing and the cough appeared to drop into my chest like it has done in the past when I have bronchitis. I went to the doctor, who diagnosed ‘acute bronchitis’, and gave me a prescription. As the days went on, my cough got worse and I got weaker. So I started doing T’ai Chi twice, sometimes three times a day for about 15 minutes each time. I was still coughing a lot but felt much better. I had so much more energy. During the exercises, I could feel energy in my hands, especially when doing the ‘Bass Drum’. I felt very calm and centered, and most of all, not afraid. Sometimes when I get sick, which has been quite a while . . . 3 years . . ., my mind runs away with negative thoughts such as, ‘Am I going to be this way forever?’, ‘Is it ever going to end?’, ‘Why me?’. The exercises helped eliminate focusing on myself. I began not caring whether I was sick or not. At night when I went to bed, I had difficulty breathing, so I slept with pillows propped up. Before I went to sleep I visualized the exercises, which again calmed my mind.”
