A Doctor & Nurse Share

“As someone who’s formally trained in three professions—as an acupuncturist, chiropractor, and physician—my experience of Reiki is that it can be a wonderful, deepening enhancement for anyone, but particularly for people in healthcare professions. And it can broaden and deepen the practice one already has in ways you will only discover once you embark on that journey.

Since I was trained in Reiki, I feel some kind of energetic connection to the patient. It think on some level I offer Reiki—open a channel for Reiki—with all my patients, whether consciously or unconsciously. It seems to happen, whether I want it to or not, which is fine with me. It just flows, and I can feel it flow. I don’t know what all the benefits can be.

I like that I feel at some level I’m embracing a mystery that’s larger than I am. It’s appealing for all of us. It’s the reason people are interested in spirituality and religion and taking a walk to watch the sunrise. We want to embrace things outside of ourselves. I can’t say I know what goes on. I think it’s larger than just the treatment. It’s a mystery which makes it feel like you are opening yourself up to things that are greater than yourself.”
James M. Dillard, MD.

“Results of a double-blind randomized clinical trial: When researchers compared groups of patients who had dental extractions, they found that those who received Reiki healing had significantly less post-op pain than those in a control group.

One female nurse in her mid 40's with lupus noticed a significant decrease in muscle swelling and less fatigue when she received Reiki in a clinic and learned to do it herself at home. Lab reports confirmed these benefits, showing a 50% drop in elevated sedimentation rate.

It is time to broaden our framework of reality to include the concept of energy field interaction in our daily lives. Healing is the movement toward wholeness, which we are all capable of doing. It is not something we do only when we are sick but is part of the process of life.

Healing is achieving a balance between the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions. And because we are all open systems the process of one person healing affects many others also.

We must awaken to the wholeness of the process of healing. We are multifaceted beings with body, mind, spirit that comprise one being. What affects one aspect affects all aspects. Human beings are not compartmentalized but are wholly interactive as one.

Wouldn’t you love to know that merely by touching with intent that not only can you bring comfort to your patients, but that you also can have a profound effect on your own sense of well being? We must elevate the power of touch to a level of respect that it deserves. Yes, it is simple intervention, but that does not mean it is insignificant. We must see and respect the value of touch, and in so doing others will see its value as well.

Have you found that those abilities that come naturally to you (for example, teaching, empathy, interpersonal skills, comfort, nurturing), that you dismiss their value because they are effortless? I did. I used to think that if it was easy it must not be important. Instead, I would look for those areas which I found more of a challenge to be my goals to attain.

Wouldn’t it be a relief to know that to be successful we do only that which feeds our soul as well? That by doing what we love that we can feel fulfilled in our work?

We are here to heal others and to allow ourselves to be healed. There is not hierarchy in the world of healing. We are all here to engage in the process.

An additional benefit is that with increased practice there is an effect on the practitioner. It is as though your life takes on a new dimension, that of quiet knowing. Intuition in other areas of your life become more keen as well.

Whatever your expertise or interest is in nursing, no matter what your setting, realizing and tapping into the power of touch can change your life. It offers a less frantic approach to nursing and the opportunity for success no matter what the outcome. It is the process of caring that we can tune into rather than the outcome to determine if we have been successful. It opens up an entirely new paradigm from which we are all invited to practice. Enjoy the journey!

Touch as a means to healing is an idea whose time has come. We as nurses can claim that which has always been a part of our profession. We must elevate the use of touch to the level of respect it deserves. That belief must begin with each of us. Start today. Be mindful. Be open. Be joyful. Be the nurse you wish to be: caring, knowledgeable, compassionate and well versed in the power of touch.”
